Greetings!
This past weekend my wife, Irene, and I were very excited for the official start of our marathon training. Our training will now be in high gear with the help from the Team for Kids Coaches. We joined 80 team members in Central Park by 81st Street for an easy 4 miler on Saturday morning. We were inspired to see that more than half of the group were first time marathoners, which includes Irene and her brother, Raymond. By the way, Irene's sister will also be running the marathon, making it all 3 Chan siblings in the marathon. I thought that was really something special! In November, approximately 1200 members will be wearing the lime green singlet in support of Team for Kids. Please let me know if your interested in joining us.
If you want to run with someone, Central Park is the place to be. Out on Long Island, you might see someone run past every hour or so but in Central Park it seemed like runners were popping out of the woodwork. Bikers were also out in droves, and you really need to pay attention to the cyclists whizzing by at 20-30 miles per hour. I came really close to being run over by a Lance Armstrong look-a-like.
We greatly appreciate your assistance in raising funds for Team for Kids. Please visit the Team for Kids donation page at http://www.nyrr.org/

Last Friday, we had the opportunity to support one of my favorite organizations, Island Harvest, in a 5K race at Wantagh Park. About 100 runners and walkers braved the rain to make this race another successful event. All of us soaked our shoes by steeple chasing into what appeared to be shallow puddles that turned out to be 2 inches deep. At the end, I was rewarded with a 2nd Place Finish in my age group and to Irene's surprise a 1st Place Finish in her age group. All Irene could do was laugh and say, "If it was sunnier..." Regardless, she did place 1st!
Three weeks ago, we enjoyed the confusing 2nd Annual Cpl Christopher G. Scherer Memorial "I Did The Grid" race. This race consisted of about 40 turns weaving around the streets of East Northport. Thank goodness for the volunteers who manned the turn signs. Without their direction, Irene and I would probably have run 6 miles instead of 4. One memorable cheer from the spectators, was one from a young lady, who shouted, "The couple who runs together, stays together!" I acknowledged her compliment with a fist pump and a whoo hoo and looked over at Irene with a smile, but her Ipod's volume was too loud to hear the kind words of this observant bystander.
With your support and encouragement, Irene and I will raise our arms high as we cross that finish line on the First of November in Central Park.
Warmest regards,
Noah and Irene Lam
