Deciding Between Washable And Disposable Bed Pads?

When dealing with incontinence, it can be hard to choose the best incontinence products for ourselves or our loved ones. Bed pads are one of the products used in managing incontinence. They protect bedding and furniture from damage caused by incontinence leakage by providing a protective and absorbent layer. This allows you to have a good night’s rest without worry about soiling your bed.

But should you use washable or disposable bed pads? Let’s learn more about the pros and cons of washable and disposable bed pads so you can make an informed decision.

Convenience

Washable bed pads require you to wash them repeatedly, which might not be a viable option for some people. Disposable bed pads are a lot more convenient since they are thrown away after each use. You can also bring them along with you on short trips and overnight stays.

Lifespan

Washable bed pads are also known as reusable bed pads. They are made with durable material to last for a longer term, and are less likely to wear and tear. Comparatively, disposable bed pads are for one-time use only and are less durable and less eco-friendly.

Price

Washable bed pads can be used again and again, making them much cheaper than disposable bed pads in the long run. If you purchase a washable bed pad that is of high quality, it can be washed more than 300 times! If you only require bed pads in the short term, such as during pregnancy or when experiencing temporary side effects after surgery, then disposable bed pads might be a better choice.

Material

Washable bed pads are quite comfortable since they’re usually made of cloth. They have a few layers of protection within it, with a fast-drying layer on the top so you can stay dry throughout the night. Since washable bed pads are non-slip and crinkle-free, your sleep will be much more comfortable – there's a smaller chance of it slipping around during the night if you toss and turn in your sleep.

Disposable bed pads offer three to four layers of protection depending on the product. Usually, the first layer is a soft, quilted material that absorbs liquid away from the skin. The next layer has an absorbent gel to trap the liquid. Finally, the last layer consists of vinyl or plastic to prevent liquid from escaping the pad and overflowing onto the bed. Since the last layer is plastic or vinyl, it can make noises when you sleep on it and disturb your sleep. It’s also more likely to shift at night compared to washable bed pads. To counteract this issue, make sure to buy disposable bed pads that come with wings so you can tuck them under the sides of the mattress. This will reduce the chances of leakage.
