How To Help Your Loved Ones Use A Bedpan

If you are caring for a loved one confined to bed, you may need to assist them with their toileting needs using a bedpan. At the onset, doing so might be intimidating to both of you. Consider some handy tips on how to use a bedpan to make the process seamless and dignifying for your loved one.

Before Using a Bedpan

Before you start using this toileting aid, follow these steps to prepare for the procedure:

  • Try to protect your loved one’s privacy as much as possible by closing the curtains and the door and covering their bottom part with a sheet.
  • After washing your hands and putting on gloves, place a protective sheet, pad, or towel beneath the patient. Using a bed pad or cover will protect the mattress and make the cleaning process easier.
  • Rinse the bedpan with warm water to make it comfortable for the patient. If it is metallic, ensure that it does not get too hot.
  • Sprinkle powder all around the edges to make it easy to slide the bedpan under the patient. Skip this step if the patient has open wounds or sores around the buttocks.
  • Cover the bottom of the bedpan with water to make it easier to clean afterward.

Positioning the Bedpan

  • If your loved one can lift their hips or sit up, give them a little support to do so as you slide the bedpan under the buttocks.
  • If that is impossible, gently turn the patient to their side and place the bedpan under their buttocks. Help them roll gently onto their back with the bedpan in place.

Using the Bedpan

  • If the bed is adjustable, raise it to help your loved one reach a semi-upright position. For a bed that is not adjustable, use pillows to prop them up while minding their safety. This is the natural position for a bowel movement and will make the process easier.
  • At this point, if your loved one can proceed without assistance, step out of the room to give them some privacy. Leave a toilet roll within reach if they are in a position to wipe themselves. If leaving the room is unsafe, stay close while giving them as much privacy as possible.

After Using the Bedpan

  • Have your loved one alert you when they are done so that you can assist with the cleanup process.
  • Help your loved one lie down and assist them in moving away from the bedpan. To avoid spills, hold the bedpan down as you do this. Cover it and set it aside.
  • Use toilet paper to wipe their bottom and follow up with wet wipes, bath wipes, or even a wet washcloth.
  • Dry the skin entirely while checking the skin for sores.
  • Remove the protective sheet or towel beneath your loved one and help them return to a comfortable position.
  • Empty the bedpan into the toilet and use soap and water to clean it thoroughly before disinfecting it.
  • Remove your gloves and wash your hands.

Your Attitude Matters

Keep in mind that your attitude will have a significant impact on your loved one’s overall experience. Try to be as calm as possible and not embarrassed, which will likely make the process less awkward. Furthermore, explaining each step will prepare your loved one psychologically for the experience.
