The COVID-19 Pandemic has brought its fair share of ups and downs, a lot of which related to mask mandates. One day they’re here, the next day they’re…reduced. With so much volatility surrounding the masks, it’s hard to keep track of what the rules are. Having an emergency stash of masks on hand may be useful as a “just in case” precautionary measure.
Throughout the entirety of the pandemic, each state (and sometimes each municipality) has had their own rules surrounding mask mandates. Some states like New York and California had strict regulations about masks and advised individuals to wear them both indoors and outside. Other states like those in the south were laxer and did not even require masks to be worn in indoor establishments. As the numbers throughout the entire country improve, more and more states are dropping the mask mandate according to new US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidance. This is a drastic change from what COVID-19 metric recommended even just months ago.
The CDC now indicates that about 28% of people in the United States live in areas where they need to mask up while indoors. This greatly contrasts with the 99% that was previously recommended based on three vital pieces of data: new COVID-19 hospitalizations, hospital capacity, and new COVID-19 cases. The current guidance suggests that over 70% of the US population is now at low or medium COVID-19 community levels, for which indoor masking is no longer recommended unless individuals are high risk.
Does that mean it’s time to toss your masks? Not quite yet. One of the major reasons that the rate of transmission is currently so low is due to the increased use of masks. In addition to social distancing among infected individuals and other measures such as vaccinations, mask wearing has been shown to help prevent the transmission of COVID-19 via respiratory particles.
Another consideration is the time of the year. As the weather gets warmer and people are spending increased periods of time outdoors, it may seem as though the pandemic is over. Unfortunately, as previous variants and waves have shown us, that may not be the truth. The best way to protect yourself from future strains is to be proactive and to not let up. Since the beginning of the pandemic, previous summers have shown us that the numbers wane when it gets warmer but tend to pick back up in the cooler months. Additionally, while masks have been instrumental for COVID-19, they have also been helpful for reducing the severity of flu and cold season.
So, before you get ready to throw out your entire set of masks, it may be useful to keep them around for a while and even think about purchasing some extras just in case.
