Does Pro-Stat need to be mixed?

No. Pro-Stat® is in liquid form and ready to use, shelf stable liquid.

Can diabetics use Pro-Stat®?

Pro-Stat® Liquid Protein  is sugar free. The updated Pro-Stat AWC (Advanced Wound Care) and RC (Renal Care) are also sugar free. Pro-Stat Profile contain fructose, a low glycemic sweetener acceptable for diabetics. Diabetics should continue their regular their regular blood glucose monitoring and consult with their doctor. For those following a carbohydrate restricted diet, a serving of  Pro-Stat® Sugar Free, AWC, RC or Max  has fewer grams of carbohydrates than a serving of juice.

How is Pro-Stat® administered?

a. Orally; Pro-Stat may be served alone without additional mixing.
b. Orally; mixed with other commercial nutritional supplements and shakes.
c. Orally; mixed into soft foods or beverages.

Pro-Stat mixes easily without clumping or decreasing the food's palatability. Suggested foods are: Canned Pineapple & Pears, Applesauce, Farina, Vanilla/Cinnamon Instant Oatmeal and Apple/Cinnamon Instant Oatmeal.
Suggested beverages are: juice, soda, coffee and tea.
Do not refrigerate, cook, or reheat foods/beverages mixed with Pro-Stat.

d. Through a feeding tube.

Which Pro-Stat® is best for advanced wounds?

Pro-Stat AWC  (Advanced Wound Care) Sugar Free is formulated for advanced wounds (Stage III and IV.) It provides 17 grams/protein and 100 K/cal per 30ml, with 3.3 grams L-Arginine, 10 mg elemental Zinc and 175 mg Vitamin C. Recommended dosage is three times daily for 4-6 weeks, or the duration of the facility’s Zinc protocol. If the wound has not healed, transition to Pro-Stat Sugar-Free three times daily until healed. A maintenance dose of Pro-Stat Sugar-Free once daily may reduce the risk of pressure ulcer recurrence (which can be as high as 80% for previous wound sites).

Which Pro-Stat® is best for ESRD/CHD patients?

Pro-Stat® RC  (Renal Care) Sugar Free is a protein/vitamin supplement specifically formulated for the ESRD/CHD patient. A 30ml dose contains 15grams of complete protein, 90 K/cal plus 5 grams of Fiber. Pro-Stat® Renal Care is an enzyme-hydrolyzed complete protein providing a high nitrogen mix of all essential, conditionally-essential and non-essential amino acids. Pro-Stat is a source of di-peptides and tri-peptides and a good source of fiber, including prebiotics, to help maintain regularity.. Pro-Stat RC provides for the increased protein and vitamin needs of the dialysis patient without the added fluid required to reconstitute powdered protein supplements. It is sugar free.

Are there any dyes used in Pro-Stat?

There are no dyes used in Pro-Stat. The color is naturally occurring.

How does Pro-Stat compare on NPU, PER and PDCAAS?

Net Protein Utilization (NPU)  is calculated by determining dietary protein intake and measuring nitrogen excretion. It evaluates protein digestibility as well as the content of essential amino acids. NPU measures the retention of absorbed nitrogen. (Nitrogen = protein). Values range from 1 to 0 (1 indicating 100% utilization of dietary nitrogen as protein, 0 indicating none of the nitrogen supplied was converted to protein). Eggs and milk equal 1 NPU. Pro-Stat equals 1 NPU.

Protein Efficiency Ratio (PER)  measures protein quality by determining how well a given protein supports weight gain in laboratory rats. From 1919 until very recently, PER had been a widely used method for evaluating the quality of protein in food. PER is no longer widely used owing to its animal (rat) methodology and its total reliance on the then 8 essential amino acids ( now 9 ). (For example, PER overestimates the methionine requirement owing to the greater need for methionine in rats for hair production.) PER calculations are rarely, if ever, performed in clinical settings because of the difficulties of collection and analysis of body wastes.

Pro-Stat provides a greater total amount of the essential amino acids per 100 grams of protein than whole eggs (which have a high PER and NPU).

Protein Digestibility Corrected Amino Acid Score (PDCAAS)  was developed by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the World Health Organization (FAO/WHO) for the measurement of protein value in human nutrition. The method is based on comparison of the concentration of the first limiting indispensable amino acid (IAA) in the test protein with the concentration of that amino acid in a reference (scoring) pattern, which was updated by the Institute of Medicine (IOM) in 2005. This scoring pattern is derived from the IAA requirements of the preschool-age child. The chemical score obtained in this way is corrected for true fecal digestibility of the test protein. PDCAAS values higher than 100% are not accepted as such but are truncated to 100%.

Although the principle of the PDCAAS method has been widely accepted, questions have been raised in the scientific community about 1) the validity of the preschool-age child amino acid requirement values, 2) the validity of correction for fecal instead of ileal digestibility and 3) the truncation of PDCAAS values to 100%. Also, the scoring pattern does not include conditionally indispensable amino acids, which also contribute to the nutrition value of a protein.

The PDCAAS of any individual protein source is most meaningful when the protein being evaluated is the sole source of dietary protein. Because dietary intake generally includes multiple protein sources with varying amino acid patterns, an individual's protein requirements are affected by the other components of the diet as well as the overall level of dietary protein and energy. Accurate evaluation of any individual diet should include the cumulative amounts of all amino acids consumed.

The PDCAAS of  Pro-Stat Max is 100%.

Pro-Stat contains essential amino acids and conditionally essential amino acids necessary for those in a stressed state. Pro-Stat’s unique formulation of polypeptides and amino acids is easily absorbed and assimilated in medically compromised individuals, including the elderly. This nutrient dense product supplies up to 15 grams of protein and 101 calories in 30ml, ideal for those with reduced appetites, or for those requiring an additional source of protein such as obese patients. In addition, arginine, glycine, proline, and hydroxyproline found in Pro-Stat are high nitrogen producers, have been shown to optimize wound healing, and help preserve lean body mass.

Does Pro-Stat® contain purines?

Pro-Stat® contains no purines. Any naturally occurring purines are removed during production.
